Homemade Pizza Dough
This homemade pizza dough recipe uses pantry-staple ingredients to make a delicious thick crust pizza recipe that can easily be customized with your favorite toppings to make your favorite pizza at home.
Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water
- 1 Tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 Tablespoon cane sugar
- ½ cup olive oil
- 5 cups unbleached flour
- 1 Tablespoon salt
Instructions
- Begin by proofing the yeast. Add 2 cups of warm water, 1 Tablespoon yeast and 1 Tablespoon sugar to a bowl. Stir to combine then cover for 10 minutes with a tea towel.
- After 10 minutes the yeast mixture should be frothy on top. Pour the yeast mixture into a large mixing bowl.
- Pour ½ cup olive oil into the bowl and use a dough hook to whisk the yeast mixture and oil together.
- Add 1 cup of flour and 1 Tablespoon of salt to the bowl and stir to combine with the yeast and oil mixture.
- Continue to add 1 cup of flour at a time, mixing as you go, until all 5 cups have been added to the bowl and you can shape the mixture into a ball of dough. You may need to transfer the dough to a clean countertop to knead the dough together.
- Place the ball of dough back into the large bowl, cover the bowl with a tea towel, and set the bowl on the countertop to allow the dough to rise for 1 hour.
- After an hour, the dough should be doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
- Use your fist to punch down into the ball of dough, releasing air.
- Remove the dough from the bowl and divide the dough into 2 equal-size pieces.
- Place the parchment paper lining the sheet pan on the countertop and place one ball of dough in the center of the parchment paper.
- Sprinkle the top of the dough with flour.
- Use a rolling pin to roll the dough out into a large circle or oval shape that is about ½ inch to 1 inch thick.
- Transfer the parchment paper with the rolled out dough on it back onto the sheet pan.
- Once the dough is rolled out, top the dough with your favorite pizza toppings starting with a layer of pizza sauce followed by a layer of cheese.
- Place the pizza in the oven and bake for 15 minutes at 425 degrees.
- Once the cheese is melted and the crust is golden brown, remove the pizza from the oven.
- Allow the pizza to cool slightly before transferring to a cutting board, cutting into pieces and serving the pizza.
