These cheesy scalloped potatoes are a classic homemade side dish recipe made with thinly sliced potatoes cooked in a creamy cheese sauce perfect for holidays or a delicious home-cooked meal.
Ingredients
- 5lb bag of russet potatoes, peeled and sliced
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 cups shredded Colby jack cheese
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- 3 Tablespoons flour
- 4 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Peel and rinse the potatoes.
- Cut each potato into thin slices.
- Place the thinly sliced potatoes in the baking dish in rows.
- Sprinkle the diced onion over the rows of potato slices.
- Make the cheese sauce by placing a medium-size saucepan on the stovetop with the burner on medium.
- Add the butter to the saucepan and allow it to melt.
- When the butter is melted, add the flour and whisk it into the melted butter.
- Pour the milk into the saucepan and whisk to combine with the flour and butter.
- Stir the salt, pepper and garlic into the mixture.
- Set aside 1 cup of shredded cheese and add the remainder of the cheese to the saucepan.
- Stir to combine the cheese with the milk and allow the sauce to thicken over medium heat before removing it from the stovetop.
- Pour the cheese sauce over the potatoes in the baking dish.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and transfer it to the oven to cook for 50 minutes at 375 degrees.
- After 50 minutes, remove the dish from the oven and remove the foil from on top.
- Sprinkle the reserved cheese on top of the potatoes.
- Return the uncovered dish to the oven and bake for 40-50 minutes or until the potatoes are fork tender.
- When the potatoes are done, remove the dish from the oven allow to cool for 5-10 minutes to allow the cheese sauce to thicken before serving.
